From 27 August, 2022 to 29 January, 2023, the Queensland Art Gallery presented a survey of nearly 100 works that celebrated the gamut of work produced by Furlonger since '88. The exhibition was notable in that it focused to a certain degree on the figurative output of the artist, especially his graphic and sculptural forms. Where a monumental exhibition might have focused upon the heroic Queensland landscape painting for which he has become known, this important take by curator Michael Hawker drew on QAG’s key holdings including one of the most important early works, the 1985 Fishermen. This compact and impeccable show leaves plenty of room for a fuller exploration of the unique take on the land that Furlonger has developed, especially since the 2000 Moreton Bay paintings.
